A Terrific Red from Apulia and Some Hearty Brews

Tasting Notes: February 9, 2015

Copertinum 2007, Copertino Rosso Riserva DOC, Italy 13% $19.99 Rockhead Wine & Beer Market, Windsor Street, Halifax (adjoining Sobey’s) Copertino is a respected Appellation in Apulia made exclusively from indigenous Negroamaro grapes. With a number of years bottle age, this example boasts developed black currant fruit, backed up with fine spice and some earthy barnyard notes on the nose. Ripe, lightly sweet black fruit in the mouth comes in a very well-balanced, medium weight package supported by supple tannins, good length and complexity. ***

Buxton Brewing Buxton Spa Special Pale Ale UK 4.1% $4.49 (330ml bottle) Rockhead Wine & Beer Market Natural, unfiltered and unpasteurised, this hazy looking brew shows a persistent creamy head with fresh herbal hoppy aromas. Citrus flavours on the palate are almost eclipsed by lingering, emphatic hoppy bitterness on the finish. If you like West Coast style IPA, you will love this one. **

New Dogtown Pale Ale, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Petaluma, California 6.2% $4.99 (12oz bottle) Rockhead Wine & Beer Market Medium amber coloured with a lightly creamy head and interesting fresh herbal scents, This well-balanced ale offers rounded body with complex flavours of citrus fruitiness, nutty malt and very dry hoppy bitterness. Characterful brew for the beer aficionado. ***

St. Bernardus Wit Belgian Trappist Beer 5.5% $4.99 (330ml bottle) Rockhead Wine & Beer Market Typical blond hazy wheat beer appearance with a light frothy head and indistinct fruity and malty aromas. Opens with lightly sweet flavour evolving into nutty malt and bitter character, shifting back to citrus notes on the finish. Slightly soapy in texture, this one is more flavourful than many wheat beers. **

Picaroons Blonde Ale, Northampton Brewing, Fredericton NB $3.90 (500ml bottle) Rockhead Wine & Beer Market Slightly hazy in appearance with appealing, subtle floral and yellow fruit scents suggestive of peach, then shifting to more orthodox citrus and nutty malt flavours with a touch of sweetness in the mouth. Finishes with appetizing bitter hop character. A solid flavourful brew with broad appeal. ***
