This posting features some great bargain wines from Cristall Wine Merchants latest “Hot Buy” listings. These prices are good until February 16th.
Also highlighted is an excellent red from Spain’s Monsant region, southwest of Barcelona. Monsant is in fact a mountain that separates the region from the very fashionable (and expensive) Priorat Appellation. I have visited the area and can attest that good Monsant wines such as this one offer somewhat similar style and excellent quality at much more affordable prices.
Lastly, Nova Scotia’s Bulwark Cider has come up with a really interesting new wrinkle, cider made from Annapolis Valley apples infused with hops normally used in beer making. It is well worth a try!
Baronia Lims Del Monsant Garnacha & Carinena Monsant DO, Spain 13.5% $19.99 ($3 off) Cristall Wine Merchants The interesting bouquet reveals fine raspberry-like fruit with elegant spice and a subtle touch of oak. Both raspberry and blackberry come through on the palate with notes of cinnamon and clove backed by fine grained tannins and balanced acidity. Offers refinement not usually found at this price. ****
Black Opal Chardonnay 2014, South Eastern Australia $15.99 13.5% $13.99 ($2 off) Cristal Wine Merchants Citrus, apple and lightly nutty scents give way to crisp apple and peach flavours with background lemon citrus supported by bracing acidity, a trace of mineral and a light touch of oak. Deftly balanced wine and solid value. ***
Vista Point Vineyards Pinot Grigio/Colombard N.V., California 11.5% 9.99 ($2 off) Cristall Wine Merchants Slightly shy apple scent with a whiff of citrus, rounded apple citrus flavours, well-balanced acidity and a touch of residual sweetness. Straightforward wine to drink as an aperitif or serve with finger foods. *
Icalma Merlot 2014, Wine of Chile 12% $9.99 ($3 off) Cristall Wine Merchants Earthy ripe plum scent with a slightly funky barnyard note that dissipates on the palate, leaving attractive ripe red cherry fruit and background blackberry. Well-balanced, with just enough tannic grip and a terrific easy drinking value. ***
Casa Santos Lima Cabra Cega Vinho Tinto 2013, Vinho Regional Lisboa, Portugal 13% $11.99 ($2 off) Cristall Wine Merchants A blend of Castelão, Syrah and Touriga Franca, this bargain red shows dark plummy fruit and hint of spice on the nose with black plum, dark cherry, a splash of dark chocolate and drying tannins in the mouth. **
Bulwark Hopped Cider – Annapolis Valley Apples infused with Hops. Handcrafted in Nova Scotia 6% $5.25 (500 ml. Bottle) Cristall Wine Merchants This imaginative drink delivers an aromatic combination of perfumed ripe apples and distinct green herbal hoppy aromas. It is light, crisply refreshing and very dry on the palate with pleasant tingling effervescence and lingering green hoppy notes on the finish. It makes a great pairing with steamed mussels. ***
