These two examples of South Australia Shiraz are from the same producer and also come from the same vintage. They provide an interesting contrast in styles, clearly demonstrating the difference in terroir between Barossa and McLaren Vale.
William Hardy Shiraz 2012 Barossa Valley, South Australia 14.5% $22.51 NSLC Port of Wines Selection (Limited Quantities) Aromatic ripe blackberry, a suggestion of raspberry, spice and dark chocolate on the nose, with rich berry fruit, cinnamon, clove and liqueur chocolate character supported by firm tannic structure, finishing with milk chocolate, sweet spice and contrasting dry tannic grip. **
Hardy’s Tintara Shiraz 2012. McLaren Vale, South Australia 14.5% $29.99 NSLC Port of Wines Selection (Limited Quantities) Whereas the William Hardy Barossa Shiraz shows plenty of richness and shear power, this one offers more finesse, with delicate notes of black currant, cinnamon and nutmeg spice. Ripe, lightly sweet blackberry flavour comes forward in the mouth, with a touch of green herb, licorice and firm but approachable tannins, all delivered in a thick, velvety texture. ***
Cristall Hot Buys – Prices Good until Sunday, July 12th
Among the current “Hot Buys” at Cristal Wine Merchants in Sunnyside Mall are two perennial favourites of mine from Coté Mas. For the convenience of readers, I have included my recent reviews on each one. There are also two wines from Sicily’s Marchese Della Torre, the Pinot Grigio and Merlot, each on sale for $2 off @ $10.99 apiece. I am familiar with these wines but have not reviewed them recently. Also reviewed below is a very good organic Prosecco made in the traditional style.
Coté Mas Rouge Intense Mediterranée 2012, Pays d’Oc IGP, France 13.5% $11.99 ($2 off) Bright fresh red fruit scents, together with green and dried herbal notes and a whiff of mineral introduce flavours of black cherry and blackberry in the mouth. Tannins are solid, with good acid balance and a dusting of dark chocolate on the finish. ***
Coté Mas Blanc Mediterranée 2012, Pays d’Oc IGP 12% $11.99 ($2 off) Cristall Wine Merchants. This light but generously flavoured fruity wine offers aromatic ripe yellow fruit with floral scents and flavours of mango, melon and peach on the palate. Excellent as an aperitif or to pair with appetizers, lighter seafood or white meat dishes. ***
Villa Teresa Organic Prosecco Veneto DOC 11% $17.99 ($2 off) Cristall Wine Merchants. Shows rather more complexity than many other Proseccos with floral, citrus and stone fruit scents and typical green apple coming out on the creamy textured palate. Appetizing mineral, lightly refreshing acidity round out the just slightly off dry finish. ***
