There are some especially interesting wines on Cristall’s Hot Buy list at the moment. Special prices are in effect until May 31st. The store is located in Sunnyside Mall, Bedford.
There are also some offerings on NSLC shelves that are worth a look. Where applicable, NSLC Reduced prices are valid until June 7th.
Artis Mixtus Chardonnay/Chenin Blanc 2014, Argentina 12% $10.99 ($2 off) Cristall Wine Merchants Sappy green fruit scents with a herbal overtone lead into lemon citrus and secondary pear flavours with dry mineral and cleansing acidity on the finish. Thoroughly drinkable and eminently affordable wine to pair with seafood or white meat dishes. Equally enjoyable as an aperitif. ***
Coté Mas Blanc Mediterranée 2012, Pays d’Oc IGP 12% $11.99 ($2 off) Cristall Wine Merchants. A long standing favourite of mine, this light but generously flavoured fruity wine offers aromatic ripe yellow fruit with floral scents and flavours of mango, melon and peach on the palate. Excellent as an aperitif or to pair with appetizers, lighter seafood or white meat dishes. ***
Saxenburg Private Collection Chardonnay 2011, Stellenbosch, South Africa 14% $24.99 ($5 off) Cristall Wine Merchants An elegant wine showing some additional complexity from bottle age, with mellow lemon citrus, spicy buttery and vanilla scents on the nose. Richly ripe lemon citrus and subtle butterscotch flavours are tempered by bright acidity, mineral grip, with citrus and toasty buttery notes on the long satisfying finish. ***
Almodi Petit Red 2013, Terra Alta DO, Spain 14.5% $14.99 ($2 off) Cristall Wine Merchants. Terra Alta is a mountainous region lying in the extreme Southwest of Catalonia. Like so many lesser-known Spanish regions, quality and finesse have been greatly improved by modern viticulture and winemaking techniques. This one is crimson coloured with fleshy red fruit scents accented by cinnamon spice. Concentrated, rounded raspberry and blackberry flavours show up on the palate wrapped in supple tannins with drying grip on the long, well integrated finish. Characterful and with some complexity, this is another very fine value. ***
Artis Mixtus Shiraz/Malbec 2014, Argentina 13% $10.99 ($2 off) Cristall Wine Merchants. Deeply scented raspberry and red currant with a distinct green herbal note shift to blackberry as well as raspberry in the mouth, backed by lightly firm tannins and good overall balance. A solid, well-made, easy to drink wine and outstanding value. ***
Joseph Drouhin Vaudon 2012, Chablis AC 12.5% $29.99 (Special Price $3 off) NSLC General List A solid, typical Chablis style from the well-respected House of Drouhin. It shows light floral, green apple, mineral and vigorous acidity, with good weight and balance. Note: I tasted the 2012 but the 2013 vintage is also on some shelves. **
Masi Modello Rosso Delle Venezie IGT, 2013 12% $13.99 ($1 off) NSLC General List Shows plum, cherry and green herbal notes with just a trace of spice which carries through on the palate. Well- structured and balanced, the wine finishes with appetizing bitter cherry bite. Excellent pairing for tomato based pastas, pizza and Italian veal dishes. ***
Canaletto Primitivo Puglia IGT 14% $12.99 NSLC General List Hearty plum and blackberry with a note of dry astringency on the nose and ripe sweet fruit tempered by old-fashioned tannic bite on the palate. Solid, well-structured robust red. Drink with grilled red meats and spicy spare ribs. ***
Tommasi 2012, Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore DOC 13%, Italy $22.99 (Special Price $2 off) NSLC (Larger Stores, Limited Quantities) Nose reveals cherry fruit with savoury and spicy notes. Black cherry and spicy plum flavours are backed by firm dry tannic structure and balanced acidity. Offering some complexity and drinking well now, but could benefit from further cellaring. ***
