Eikendal Cuvée Blanc Chardonnay & Sauvignon Blanc 2014, Stellenbosch, South Africa 13% $12.99 ($2 off) This unusual blend reveals varietal Sauvignon fresh green herb, green fruit and stony mineral aromatics with grassy green fruit and crisp mineral in the mouth. A touch of grapefruit on mid-palate leads into more rounded Chardonnay-like citrus flavours with some leesy softness, finishing crisp and dry. A lively and intriguingly different wine. Well worth a try. ***
Coté Mas Rouge Intense Mediterranée 2012, Pays d’Oc IGP, France 13.5% $11.99 ($2 off) Bright fresh red fruit scents, together with green and dried herbal notes and a whiff of mineral introduce flavours of black cherry and blackberry in the mouth. Tannins are solid, with good acid balance and a dusting of dark chocolate on the finish. ***
Fifth Leg Shiraz 2012, Western Australia 14.5% $13.99 ($3 off) Shows some depth and complexity with developed Shiraz varietal raspberry, cinnamon and a pinch of white pepper on the nose. Shifts to rich blackberry flavours on the palate in a medium to full-bodied package with well-integrated fruit, oak and light dry tannins on the finish. Good value in the $17-$18 range – a steel at this price! ***
La Magdalena Sueño Tempranillo 2011, Ribera del Jùcar[SW1] DO, Spain 14% $19.99 ($4 off) Ribera del Jùcar is a small appellation within the large Castilla-La Mancha region, which earned DO status in 2001. It is another example of the higher quality coming from lesser regions now using modern viticulture and wine making techniques. Complex, spicy red currant and floral scents suggestive of violets on the nose, move to characteristic varietal red currant and blackberry on the palate. Tannins are firm and dry, with good weight and a touch of chocolate, finishing very dry. Drinking quite well now, but worth laying down for another 3 years or so. ***
