As mentioned in my last blog, Cristall Wine Merchants in Bedford’s Sunnyside Mall, has recently brought in a number of solid Spanish reds from various regions around the country. Here are two more, as well as an Anjou red from France’s Loire Valley.
The first of the Spanish duo comes from Priorat, an ancient wine region in Catalonia, revived relatively recently and now recognised as potentially great. I have visited the region and you can still see the outlines of very old, steeply terraced vineyards on the barren hillsides. New capital and modern viticulture has produced stunning results. The best wines show both depth and complexity.
The second Spanish wine is from Jumilla, further to the southwest of Priorat, near Murcia. In the past, Jumilla wines have been densely concentrated and often clunky. Once again, modern viticultural methods are starting to show good results. These typically robust reds are now offering some finesse to go along with their richness and density.
We do not see many Anjou reds in Nova Scotia. Anjou Rosê is more common. The cool climate can mean under-ripe wines, particularly in cooler years. The best, though, are lively and fresh. Ideal to pair with charcuterie and lighter meat dishes.
Maquilon 2013, Priorat DOC, Spain 14% $29.99, Cristall Wine Merchants Made from 100% Garnacha Negre, this one exudes enticingly ripe fleshy red fruit scents with subtle earthiness, cinnamon and a faint trace of green herb. Developed raspberry and redcurrant themes play through on the palate with a splash of milk chocolate, delivered in a firmly structured, full bodied package. Drink with robust red meats, game dishes or aged, firm-ripened cheese such as Manchego. Will continue to improve for many years of additional cellar ageing. ***
MMM – Macho Man Monastrell 2012, Jumilla DO, Spain 14% $24.99 Cristall wine Merchants As the name indicates, the wine is 100% Monastrell. It shows ripe, spicy red and dark fruit on the nose and softly rounded, lightly sweet ripe fruit, led by juicy blackberry and blackcurrant, in the mouth. Supported by firm but approachable tannins, it finishes with a lick of dark chocolate, fine fruit and good length. ***
Domaine Chupin 2009, Anjou Rouge AC 12% $16.99 Cristall Wine Merchants Intense cherry-scented aromatics lead the way for black cherry flavour backed by firm dry tannins, medium weight and bracing acidity on the palate. This is a cool-climate, food friendly wine to pair with lighter white or red meat dishes. **
