The Spanish theme is quite timely as Spain today offers some of the best values to be found anywhere. At one time, the country was little known for quality wines other than those from Rioja and one or two other regions. Not so today. Excellent wines can be found throughout the country. Modern winemaking and fresh ideas have completely transformed the Spanish world of wine.
Look for wines from less familiar regions and indigenous grape varieties. There are many exciting discoveries to be found. Even in Rioja a great transformation has taken place. There are more Single Vineyard and single varietial wines, other than the ubiquitous Tempranillo, showing up on the market. Give them a try. Other regions well worth a look are Bierzo with the local variety red variety Mencia, and white Godello. Rias Baixas, in the far Northwest, boasts its now iconic Albarino variety. Ribiero del Duero, Toro and Navarra all offer outstanding wines. Southeastern star region Proirat is now getting a run for its money from adjoining Monsant. Nearby, the well-tracked Pened region continues to innovate. The quality and variety of sparkling Cava is better than ever.
In short, there is a wealth of wines to discover in Spain and prices remain very reasonable.
